What is comedy improv?
Improvisational comedy means we perform scenes based on audience suggestions. Everything is made up on the spot- completely spontaneous- and will never be seen again (which can be a bad or good thing). Each show is different!
What is the goal of Mock Turtle Soup?
We strive to show original comedic performances to entertain the student body and surrounding Clemson area! We train our performers to the highest standards of comedic theater.
What is the difference between short form and long from?
Short form improv are games that last only a few minutes and have a predetermined premise (think “Whose Line is it Anyways?), and long form is a 20 minute improvised play. We perform both at each show, starting with short form, then a 10 minute intermission, and ending with long form.
Do I have to participate in a show?
We encourage everyone to participate in a show, but you will only be chosen if you volunteer. If you don’t want to participate, just come and enjoy the performance!
How can I participate in a show without being in the Troupe?
All of our scenes are based off audience suggestions, so when we ask for a suggestion just shout it out! For example, we might ask, “Can we get a suggestion of a relationship for these improvisors?” and you could shout out, “rival step-siblings!” and it might be chosen. Occasionally, we also ask for volunteers to come on stage. When that happens, just raise your hand!
What is Nocturnal Soup?
Nocturnal Soup is our late night after show. It is where we try out new material, such as short form games we are thinking of adding to our main stage show. We also have specialty shows like an all stand-up Nocturnal Soup. The content of these shows is more explicit than our main show and anything goes.
How can I support Mock Turtle Soup?
By coming to shows! You can directly donate at our Donate page, or indirectly advertise by inviting friends, family, or those ex-boyfriends that you swore you’d never talk to again to a show!
What is the meaning to life/the universe?
Comedy gives us purpose. While it might not give you purpose, you can at least laugh with us as we figure it out together… I think
When are shows?
Shows are once a month! Check out the homepage or social media for exact dates and updates!
When are auditions?
They are held once a year in the fall (usually the second or third week of September) and consist of three days. Two days of auditions and one day of call backs. You only NEED to come to one day of auditions, but we recommend you come to both.
How do I prepare for auditions/what do I do at auditions?
Just be yourself! We want to see YOU. You can try getting to know the troupe members a bit by coming to an info session (dates vary, check our social media for updates), show you are prepared to learn, and not everything has to be a joke. At auditions, you will perform scenes with other people auditioning and with troupe members. Just have fun! If you want more advice, just google how to be a great improvisor! **experience is NOT required!**
Can I come see what a practice/what improv is like?
Yes! Other than shows we regularly have open practices where anyone can come and practice improv with us. Dates vary, so check our social media for updates!
How often does the troupe practice?
Part of auditioning and being apart of the troupe means being able to commit to rehearsals. Those are Sundays 4- 6pm and Tuesday and Thursday 9-11pm. Why so late? That way everyone can get out of labs in the afternoon and still make it to practice on time.
How is Clemson Improv responding to COVID-19?
We are taking COVID-19 very seriously. We follow university guidelines at every practice and show, and request our audience do the same. Our goal is to create a safe atmosphere where everybody feels comfortable, safe, and happy!
